WHITE 10th & 9th Gup

The beginner's belt color. White symbolizes purity. White represents a primitive stage of development. The white belt is described as a seed as it lies dormant beneath the snows of winter.

ORANGE 8th & 7th Gup

Orange signifies hope. Orange represents the knowledge that begins to emerge like the budding of a young plant in spring.

GREEN 6th & 5th Gup

Green signifies youth and excitement. Green represents the speedy development of youth as summer arrives.

BROWN 4th & 3rd Gup

Brown signifies power and wisdom. Brown represents plants which hold back their growth and prepare to flower in the late summer.

RED 2nd and 1st Gup

Red signifies blood, life, energy, attention, and control. The student’s power and techniques begin to bloom and ripen, as they begin to mature.

BLUE Cho Dan Bo (Black Belt Candidate)

Blue signifies maturity, respect, and honor. Now the student begins the preparation of mind and body for the final step needed to attain the rank of Cho Dan (Black Belt).

Black represents maturity, respect, and honor. It symbolizes a mastery of basics, calmness, dignity, and sincerity. This level is the final stage of one life cycle and the beginning of the next. Thus, it is not the end of a student’s growth, but rather the beginning of a new path leading through the different ranks of black belt towards true mastery.
